English Partnerships' Annual Report published

English Partnerships' 2005/06 Annual Report has just been published (July 2006) (http://www.englishpartnerships.co.uk/). It shows this regeneration agency's expenditure up by 73% on the previous year to £836m.

The main interest for urban nature conservationists should be English Partnerships' role as the Government's specialist advisor on brownfield land, but there is scant mention of anything other than economic development of these vital pieces of green infrastructure. There are references here and there to recreational use, open spaces and 'nature', and one or two images of orthodox green spaces, but nothing to indicate that English Partnerships are enthusiastic or particularly knowledgable about the value of wildlife in towns and cities. There is also mention of four parcels of land going to the Land Restoration Trust.

We may be comforted by the presence of Robert Napier of WWF-UK and Jon Rouse of the Housing Corporation on the Board (both of whom have shown that they do understand some of the issues surrounding nature conservation) but we would be much happier if the Report included at least one case study showing brownfield land being restored to high quality semi-natural green space, and that such activity is as important to English Partnerships as building houses and work spaces.
