CPRE Promotes Compact Communities

30th Nov, 2006

The Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) has just published a report called Compact Sustainable Communities. It claims to be ‘Making the case for well planned, higher density, mixed use urban development: meeting housing needs, improving quality of life and protecting the environment.’

The Report has been prepared by CPRE London, and focuses on what might and should happen there. Subjects covered include the Thames Gateway, misconceptions about high density and high rise, car parking, avoiding ‘town cramming’, the public realm, case studies on Georgian and Victorian housing, and winning support for compact communities.

Although there are frequent rather general references to open spaces there does not seem to be any detailed mention of the natural environment and its contribution to the city-dweller’s quality of life. Coupled with the usual mantra that (in the Thames Gateway) things can be improved ‘particularly by accommodating new housing on urban brownfield land’ this publication displays the usual weakness in this area of policy.

The Report is available for £5 from the CPRE. Details on their website: www.cpre.org.uk
