3rd Feb, 2008
A community group in Liverpool has received support from the City Council in their fight to save Harthill Copse, a small woodland in Calderstone Park. In this reverse of the usual situation, the woodland is threatened by a local allotments association whose committee is alleged to want to fell the tiny woodland. Some plotholders have formed a group called Tiny Wodlands to fight the felling proposals. Senior City Councillors and the Mersyside Biodiversity Officer are supporting Tiny Woodlands.
The site is in one corner of a green wedge. Birds seen include nuthatch, great tit and leser spotted woodpecker, and mammals include wood mouse, hedgehog, fox and stoat.
Full details are on the website http://www.merseyworld.com/interfest/Save%20Harthill%20Copse.html
The website does say that the Copse is saved, so on this occasion it seems that the passion and commitment of local people has saved a corner of Liverpool for wildlife.
