Passing on The Passion

8th Aug, 2008

In May 2008 more than 400 scientists, planners and urban environmental practitioners met in Erfurt, Germany, at URBIO 2008. Their focus was urban biodiversity, in particular the current state of knowledge and practice in this field.

Amongst the outcomes of the event was the Erfurt Declaration(http://www.iclei.org/fileadmin/template/project_templates/LAB-bonn2008/user_upload/files/Urbio2008_ErfurtDeclaration.pdf). The preamble of the Declaration begins: 'The increasing urban population, climate change and loss of biodiversity are all strongly connected. With two thirds of a considerably larger world population predicted to be living in urban areas by 2050, the 'Battle for life on Earth' will be won or lost in urban regions.' The document goes on to highlight tthe importance of urban biodiversity, the case for it, future challenges and ways of addressing these.

The Declaration is complemented by the 'Erfurt Flags' - celebrations of natural wealth and the sparks that inspired individuals' interest in and passion for nature. The flags will be showcased at the National Wildflower Centre and other places in Liverpool as part of the European Capital of Culture celebrations.

Since the conference progress has been made with developing an Urban Nature Network. More details of this are at http://www.els.salford.ac.uk/urbannature
